Spain was touring in Marseille in february. Musikplease couldn’t miss the oportunity to ask some questions to Josh Haden, his leader.
Musik Please : – If I tell you that Sargent Place is almost as good as The Blue Moods, do you agree or are you annoying about that ?
Josh Haden : – I agree with it but I don’t worry about other people think, I just try to do my best.
MP : – In what fields Sargent Place is better than The Soul Of Pain ?
Josh Haden : – I don’t really see evolution, I just write the songs and I hope they come out good. I just always have a big background of songs and I can choose from it or I can choose new songs. Sometimes I’m right and sometimes I’m wrong. So as evolution between the two albums, I let other people decide, I don’t worry about it.
MP : – Tell us about Sunday Morning’s conception. What an amazing song !
Josh Haden : – Oh, thank you ! I was interested in Sunday morning, a time which is a spiritual time, where some people are just waking up and going to church. I think it’s a time were two different ways of spirituality come together and I wanted to write a song about that time.
MP : – And what about the rhythm of the song ?
Josh Haden : – I don’t know. Some people have called my music slow or slowcore and I’m boring about that. You know, I have a producer on Sargent Place called Gus Seyffert and he sometimes said “Josh, this doesn’t sound like Spain, you need to change it” And I said OK. It’s not something I can do. I need a producer who can tell me “Josh, to the listener point of view, this is not sound like Spain” and I say”OK, thank you for saying that. A good example is for the song You and I which sounded with a very majestic sound and Gus said “Josh, it sounds too much like U2, you have to change it”. So, it became a beautiful song with my dad. That’s the things I need as an artist. A guy as Bon Iver doesn’t need a producer, but I need one.
MP : – Is there any spiritual dimension in your music ?
Josh Haden : – Well, I will call it spiritual because music that speaks to me is spiritual, like religious music, that cannot be describe by language. I have a section on my Itunes which is just religious music from all over the world. It’s over 20,000 and that’s the soundtrack of my life and it inspires me.
MP : – Can you tell that your new musicians are in the spirit of Spain ?
Josh Haden : – Everything that I do in the band is in the spirit of the band. It cant be in an another way. I don’t have any control to what happens to me or to my music. From the moment I was born, I haven’t have control over that so. I have a vision and I put my vision forth and I’m grateful when people like what I’m doing. At the same time, I will do it anyway, even if nobodies like it.
MP : – Your sisters are with you from the beginning. Were you playing music at home when you were younger ?
Josh Haden : – Yes, we were playing music all the time. My dad comes from a performing family. So we were always singing together and playing music. My sisters started a band and they were rehearsing in a bedroom. So I listened to them and I said “This is really good, I can make music like this too”. That was the area where I started to put Spain together before I had the name of Spain. So my sisters have been a big part of it from the beginning. And they still are ! I which I can tour with them, it will be great. Someday, it will happen. The problem is financial and also just getting everyone on the same schedule because Tania is a mum, she has 2 kids, it’s hard for her to tour. Same thing for Petra : She’s constantly working, touring and playing music. I think we can do a 2 or 3 week tour, it’s possible, we’re talking about it.
MP : – Have you plan to play The Blue Moods live ?
Josh Haden : – My manager is trying to arrange that in LA, but I don’t have a plan for a tour of it. Doing a tour for playing The Blue Moods record in the way I want to do it, it would be hard financially, but I hope it will happen.
MP : – Who are the bass players that inspire you ?
Josh Haden : – They’re so many ! My dad, number one, Charles Mingus is a big influence, I love Jack Bruce…
MP : – 3 tracks from your present playlist please !
Josh Haden : – Scarlatti : Sonates Margo Guryan : Most Of My Life Dead Kennedys : Moral Majority.
